In a shocking case of crime reported from Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai, a 36-year-old woman was allegedly made to pen down a suicide note and then strangulated to death by a bank staffer, reportedly after her husband failed to pay the monthly instalments of a personal loan. The Rabale police have arrested the 38-year-old accused, identified as Samadhan Landve.

As per reports, the victim was identified as Shital Nikam. It is suspected that she and the accused, Samadhan Landve, were having an illicit affair. Landve took a personal loan under his name and gave Rs 6.5 lakh to Nikam’s husband. Due to the pandemic-induced financial crisis, Nikam’s husband failed to pay the EMIs of the personal loan to Landve, leading to a financial dispute.

“The accused said due to non-payment of EMIs, he was also under the pressure. On October 21, when he went to meet Nikam, both of them fought over this issue… Landve told Nikam ‘either you pay me or just die’,” a report by The Indian Express quoted an officer as saying.

After Nikam uttered that she would die, Landve asked her to pen down a suicide note. Shockingly, he then strangulated her to death with a sari after she wrote the note. He then attempted to hang her corpse from the ceiling fan but didn’t succeed, as the blades of the fan got damaged.

“Later, he fled from the spot and Nikam’s body was found lying inside the bedroom with a sari around her neck, along with a broken fan and a suicide note,” added the officer.

Subsequent police probe led to the revelation of the financial dispute. Police learnt that on the day of the incident, Landve had visited Nikam’s house. Following this, Landve was subjected to interrogation. He initially tried to mislead the police. However, later, he confessed to having committed the crime. A case has been registered against him under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
