The angry inmates had demanded that the police register an FIR against the jail staff for torturing Manjula Shetty. The inmates had claimed that Manjula was killed by the prison staff.

Notice of indictment by the court

The crime branch of the police had filed a charge sheet in the Byculla jail violence case last year. The charge sheet was taken up by the Esplanade Magistrate’s Court and the accused were summoned. Meanwhile, Indrani Mukherjee was released on bail on condition that she attend the trial. After the death of Manjula Shetty in 2017, Indrani Mukherjee and more than 30 inmates of Byculla Women’s Jail were charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting and intimidation. The women prisoners had staged agitation demanding an inquiry into the death of Manjula Shetty and allegation that she was beaten by prison staff. Mumbai Police had filed a chargesheet in the case last year. The court then summoned the accused to appear during the hearing.

Bail on personal caste bond of Rs. 15,000

An Additional Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to Indrani Mukherjee on personal caste bond of Rs 15,000 on the condition of not intimidating or threatening anyone involved in the case. Indrani Mukherjee had filed the petition through her lawyer Sana Rais Khan. Accused Indrani Mukherjee was not arrested during the investigation. Investigating officers have filed a chargesheet.
