It was argued on behalf of Indrani that her trial has been going on for more than 6 years. Right now there is no chance of it being dealt with soon. This has also been considered by the court as a major ground for bail. A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao, BR Gavai and AS Bopanna gave this verdict. Mukherjee was arrested by the Mumbai Police on August 25, 2015 for the murder of daughter Sheena.

The court said, ‘Indrani Mukerjea has been in custody for 6.5 years. We are not commenting on the merits of the case. Even though 50 per cent of the witnesses have been released by the prosecution, the trial will not end soon. Hence he has been granted bail. The top court said the conditions applicable to Peter Mukerjea would also apply to Indrani. Indrani’s ex-husband Peter Mukerjea is also an accused in this case.
