Sessions court on Wednesday granted bail to Amravati MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Navneet Rana and Ravi Rana, who were jailed for treason for chanting Hanuman Chalisa at Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s private residence ‘Matoshri’. A detailed copy of the court order in this regard has been made available today and it has become clear that the court has hit the state government hard while granting bail to the Rana couple.

“According to Section 124-A of the Indian Penal Code, treason charges against the Rana couple are not substantiated,” the court observed. Navneet Rana and Ravi Rana did not leave their residence in Khar after the Mumbai police issued notices to them and also withdrew their agitation. Even then, the court slammed the state government, saying it was wrong to charge him with treason.

Although the sentiments expressed by the accused against the Chief Minister are objectionable, the necessary elements regarding the crime of treason are not seen, said Judge Rahul Rokade of the special court hearing the cases against the MLAs and MPs.
