In yet another shocking incident, a 38-year-old man allegedly posed as the commissioner of Bidhannagar Police and extorted money from the family of an alleged sexual offender.
The fraudster gathered information about the alleged sex offender from the Barasat court where his case was being heard. The fraudster used the photograph of the Bidhannagar Police commissioner to make the alleged scam look genuine. The fraudster allegedly downloaded the picture of the commissioner from a caller identification application and used it as his Whatsapp DP.
Police have identified the accused as Sushobhan Saha and booked him under IPC sections of forgery, cheating and extortion.

Following this, he was arrested from his Barasat hideout by the cyber crime police department of Bidhannagar police.
The accused was then presented before the Salt Lake court, where he was remanded to police custody for six days.
According to police, a young professional homemaker lodged a complaint against the accused and a case was started. Police said that an amount of Rs 1.5 lakh was already paid to the cyber fraudster but he demanded more money, hence she reported the matter to the police.
An officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said that the woman’s husband has been allegedly involved in a sexual assault case and he has been placed under judicial custody at a jail in Dum Dum. The accused called the woman and claimed to settle the matter at Rs 4.5 lakh, the officer added.
