Autorickshaw drivers in Vasai-Virar have suddenly increased rickshaw fares. The minimum fare (first phase) has been increased to Rs 35. The minimum fare for a shared rickshaw has been fixed at Rs. Rickshaw associations have clarified that the price hike is due to high petrol prices. Meanwhile, despite the fact that most of the rickshaws in Vasai run on CNG, the citizens have expressed their indignation over the fare hike.

According to the new tariff, the fare has been increased by Rs 5 to 10. The minimum fare for a shared rickshaw has been increased from Rs 10 to Rs 15 and the special fare has been reduced from Rs 30 to Rs 35.

In many places special fares have been increased from Rs 40 to Rs 80. This has angered the citizens. Already the rickshaw puller Carona was charging Rs 40 each with only two passengers despite the restrictions being relaxed. Now they have suddenly raised fares. Sub-Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Dashrath Waghule was contacted but did not respond.

Gasoline prices are rising day by day. Therefore, the rickshaw fare had to be increased, said Premshankar Gupta (Divisional President, Rickshaw Association).

He said that every rickshaw puller incurs huge expenses for insurance, license renewal, PUC as well as service tax while buying a rickshaw. Every year, every rickshaw puller has to pay Rs. 25,000 for these various taxes. This is the first increase in rent since 2017.
