Three constables suspended over custodial torture of youth in Varthur

Three constables Nagabhushan Gowda, Nagaraj BN, and Shivakumar who tortured a 22-year-old youth in custody for five days have been suspended.

Three constables from Barthur police station have been suspended for alleged custodial torture of a 22-year-old youth. The suspended cops have been identified as Nagabhushan Gowda, Nagaraj BN, and Shivakumar H. Reportedly, the suspended cops’ assaulted a youth during his illegal detention between October 27 and 31 at the Varthur Police Station

The victim, identified as Salman Khan, was allegedly assaulted to the extent that his right arm had to be amputated. The 22-year-old youth is a resident of Varthur in east Bengaluru. According to the police, Salman was picked up by the city police on October 27 in a private vehicle with a Kerala registration number in connection with a theft of car batteries.

The police officials’ suspension comes after the alleged assault on Salman was so severe that his right arm was amputated on November 8.

The report further suggests that Salman was then taken to Varthur police station where he was allegedly assaulted by three constables. While commenting on the incident, the 22-year-old victim youth said, “I confessed to stealing three car batteries. They then took me to the people to whom I had sold the batteries. Three cops assaulted me for three days. They targeted one body part at a time and hit my right hand and kicked me,” as saying was quoted by the Indian Express.

The victim said that the policemen probing the case also asked him to confess other thefts he had committed or not. Three cops assaulted and tied him upside down and beat him.
