In a shocking incident reported from Gurugram district of Haryana, a migrant worker from UP was beaten to death at a Badminton Academy at Sector 37 of the city. The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Anuj Kumar, who worked as housekeeping staff. Anuj was beaten with sticks and rods and succumbed to his injuries.
Anuj along with his brother-in-law Sanjay had left his rented accommodation on Monday morning to work at a residential society in Sector 37.
According to Sanjay, they reached the Heritage Badminton Academy and were spotted by few men sitting in an SUV. Sanjay said the accused were drinking and got angered after seeing them.
“I don’t know what was going on in their mind. When they saw us they kept saying that these ‘Biharis’ must be beaten up. They could see that we were migrants and it made them very angry. They dragged us both inside the cars and began beating us. We were then taken to Heritage Badminton Academy where we were further assaulted,” the report quoted Sanjay as saying.
The accused have been identified as Manjeet, Puneet, Manish among others.
In a complaint to Sector 10 police, the victim Sanjay said that a woman, who was in the car, accused Anuj and him of allegedly misbehaving with her. Sanjay said the accused assaulted them despite they denying the allegation.
Sanjay further said that no woman was involved in the incident and the story was cooked up by the accused.
“We had gone to meet our contractor for work, We are very poor people from UP. We did not intend to misbehave with anyone. The accused used it as a pretext to beat us,” the report further quoted Sanjay as saying.
Anuj came to Gurugram from Jaunpur after the death of his father five months ago. Meanwhile, Gurugram police have termed the incident as a case of mistaken identity.
“On Monday, a female player was on her way to the Badminton Academy when two men on a bike allegedly made vulgar signs at her. She called her father, coach and relatives immediately. It appears that the men who came on her behalf thought that Anuj and Sanjay were with the accused and beat them in retaliation. One of the victims passed away due to assault injuries. An accused Binda Prasad has been arrested, while others are being searched for,” the report quoted Subhash Boken, Gurugram Police PRO, as saying.
