With the arrest of two brothers on Sunday, the Kolkata Police cracked the case of the murder of a 45-year-old woman and 13-year-old son in the city. The arrestees — Sanjay Das (44) and Sandeep (32) — are cousins of the now-deceased woman, identified as Susmita Mondal.

Susmita Mondal, a school teacher by profession, and her minor son Tamojit Mondal, who was a Class 6 student of a reputed English medium school, were found murdered at their residence in the Parnasree locality of Behala area in Kolkata last week. Police, after receiving information, registered a case and initiated investigations that led to the arrest of her two cousins — Sanjay and Sandeep — in connection with the crime.

According to the police, Sanjay and Sandeep are brothers. Sanjay had taken multiple loans from different people for the wedding of his son. He worked as a CCTV maintenance personnel at a mall in the city’s Dharmatala area. Due to the pandemic situation, he didn’t make enough money in the last year. His brother Sandeep was also facing financial issues. Both brothers were struggling to clear their loans.

Sandeep often visited Susmita. He learnt that she had a lot of jewellery. The two brothers, subsequently, hatched a plot to hack Susmita to death, so that they could steal her gold jewellery to repay their loans. On September 6 afternoon, the duo came to Susmita’s house. After talking to her for some time, they stabbed her to death with a kitchen knife. Her son Tamojit — who was attending his e-lectures – rushed out of his room, as he sensed commotion. The child witnessed the crime. Subsequently, the two men killed him as well, a report by The Indian Express stated.

The investigators suspected that the crime was an insider’s job because they did not find any signs of forced entry and there were teacups on the table, the report stated. Investigators made a list of the victim’s acquaintances and relatives. Inquiries led them to zero in on Sandeep and Sanjay. Both were picked up by the police. The two, during questioning, confessed to having killed the mother-son duo.
