In a disconcerting development, Mumbai’s Vidya Vihar area, particularly the Banjara Basti locality, is currently witnessing the encroachment of railway lands by the notorious land mafia. Just days ago, this region showcased a vibrant tapestry of greenery and flourishing trees, as evident in recent satellite imagery.

Located in close proximity to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, the responsibility for safeguarding railway property lies with the Railway Protection Force (RPF). However, a collusion involving certain corrupt RPF officials has resulted in the area being systematically used for extensive dumping of soil and debris by numerous trucks. The consequence is a rapid disappearance of the once lush landscape.

A significant concern looms as Kishor Chavan, a known figure associated with the land mafia, is anticipated to seize yet another parcel of railway land in the near future. This foreseen encroachment is expected to pave the way for the construction of numerous shanties, to be subsequently sold at exorbitant prices.

The critical issue at hand points to the urgent need for intervention to prevent the re-appropriation of several acres of Central Railway land. The unholy alliance between financial interests and corrupt officials is jeopardizing valuable railway assets.

A plea is directed to the senior authorities of Central Railway to take prompt action and protect these vital land reserves from falling into the hands of the land mafia. The clock is ticking, and swift measures are imperative to preserve Mumbai’s railway heritage.
