A 21-year-old woman in Kolkata was allegedly molested inside an autorickshaw by a man on Sunday. Reportedly, the accused flashed the woman on a busy road, prompting her to raise an alarm. The locals present at the spot and the police personnel on duty then rushed to the woman’s rescue and caught hold of the accused.
The incident took place at the Behala tram depot between 9.30 pm and 9.45 pm on Sunday, when the woman was on her way back home. The accused has been identified as Sudhir Majhi.
Accused tried to make eye contact
The woman took an auto from Rashbehari to Behala. During this time, Majhi sat next to her and kept trying to make eye contact. The woman, however, ignored the accused. Undeterred, the accused made attempts to molest the woman during the auto ride. The woman and the accused got off from the vehicle at the Behala tram depot, The Times of India reported.
Accused flashed woman on crowded road
Reportedly, the accused started following the woman and suddenly flashed her. The woman raised an alarm and the accused was caught before he could flee from the spot. The investigating officer of the case said, “The victim has told us that this was the first time that she faced such an incident. We are trying to know from her and the auto operator whether the accused was warned by other passengers for his behaviour. We are also finding out if the accused is a habitual offender. ”
The police said that they produced the accused before a court and have sought permission to record the woman’s statement in the presence of a magistrate. An officer privy to the case said that they are also checking the CCTV footage of nearby areas for further leads.
