Man strangulates live-in partner to death after she calls up his wife, scolds her

Bhubaneshwar: A 35-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly strangulating his 26-year-old live-in partner to death in Bharatpur area of Bhubaneshwar in Odisha.

The accused has been identified as Kartik Jena, a Nayagarh native who worked as a mason in Bhubaneshwar. He is a married man with two children. He was allegedly having an extramarital affair with one Sandhyarani Sethi, a widow.

On September 7, Sandhyarani was found killed at her rented accommodation in Bharatpur area. Subsequent police inquiries revealed that she had rented the place with Jena. The two were in a live-in relationship.

Jena’s wife and children stayed in Nayagarh’s Chadheibandha. A few months ago, he came in contact with Sandhyarani, who was looking for a job. He got her employed at a construction site, where he worked as a mason. Later, they developed an affair. Issues cropped up when Jena’s wife grew suspicious that her husband was having an illicit relationship with Sandhyarani.

A police officer said that one day, an altercation flared up between Jena and Sandhyarani after she asked him to leave his spouse. Later, Sandhyarani phoned Jena’s wife and chided her. Jena flew into rage over this. On the night of September 3, Jena killed Sandhyarani by strangulating her. He then locked the door from outside and fled. The crime remained under the wraps for four days.
