After Virat Kohli stepped down as captain in T20Is after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, the Indian cricket team is back to the split captaincy days after a gap of more than four years since MS Dhoni was leading the side in limited-overs and Virat Kohli in Tests.

Rohit Sharma has replaced him in the ODIs ahead of the South Africa tour and Kohli will continue to lead in the Test matches. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir heaped praise on India’s new captain in both the white-ball formats saying that the Indian cricket is in safe hands as they are now being led by someone who has won five IPL titles as a skipper.

Gambhir said that he must be doing something right as compared to the other captains as winning five trophies isn’t easy while appreciating Rohit’s calmness as a leader.

“Rohit Sharma has won 5 IPL titles as a captain, so he must be doing something right as compared to other captains and at the same time [the best thing about him is] his calmness and sometimes his laid back attitude as well, keeping things relaxed, at the same time not pushing players too hard,” Gambhir said while speaking on Star Sports show Follow the Blues.

Gambhir said that Rohit is a chilled-out character and this calmness will help the team and his teammates. “Rohit himself is a chilled out character as well which actually helps the entire squad plus I think it’s good for Indian cricket that now we have got two captains – one in white-ball cricket and one in red-ball cricket so Rohit will get enough time to groom white-ball cricket, whether it is the T20 format or ODI.

“I feel that Rohit Sharma as a leader will definitely do well for Indian cricket, so Indian cricket is in very safe hands,” he further added.
