School teacher ‘attacked’ over online chat with student’s mother ends life

A school teacher and art director allegedly ended his life in Kerala after he was attacked by a group of locals. The 44-year-old man was found hanging at his residence under the Vengara police station limits on Saturday morning. The friends and family members of the deceased have alleged that moral policing and assault drove him to suicide.

The police suspect that the deceased, Suresh Chaliyath, breathed his last on Saturday morning. The police said that while some reports suggest that the victim had an argument with a student’s mother, a complaint alleging the same has not been submitted to them.

After being alerted, the police lodged a case of unnatural death under section 174 Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

According to a friend of the deceased, he was assaulted by a group of people at his residence on Thursday. The friend recalled that Suresh had been taking online classes and during the same time, he had an argument with a student’s mother.

On Thursday, a group of persons went to Suresh’s house and allegedly assaulted him in front of his family members. The accused dragged the man to a vehicle and continued raining blows on him, The Times of India reported.

Suresh’s friend added, “Again, on Friday, he was taken away in the guise of mediation to solve the issue and was thrashed at a house. He had sustained severe injuries in the assault. ”

The man added that a complaint pertaining to the assault was not filed. He said that the deceased worked as an art director for Udalaazham and blamed the assault for the suicide.
