UP police has arrested former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur in connection with the suicide of a woman and her male friend outside the Supreme Court of India. UP police arrested him after its two members DG level committee found him and jailed BSP MP Atul Rai accused of abetment of suicide
Meanwhile, Delhi Police is investigating the case as suicide was committed in the national capital on August 16.Thakur was picked up by a team of Lucknow’s Hajratganj police from his residence in Gomti Nagar. The drama was also unfolded when the team went to nab him. Amitabh Thakur refused to sit in the vehicle and started demanding the FIR copy or court’s arrest warrant.
Interestingly, Amitabh Thakur is a controversial IPS who had taken the VRS in March this year. Since then he was very vocal against the BJP run Yogi government and recently announced to contest the election against Yogi by floating a political party.
Woman, a native of Ballia had lodged an FIR against Atul Rai in 2018 of raping her at a flat in Varanasi. Rai was later arrested and also won the Lok Sabha elections from Ghosi while remaining in jail in 2019.
Since then, the woman and her male friend who was also stated to be one of the witnesses were fighting the case in court. In the meantime, seven cases were registered against the woman and witnesses and the last was lodged by Rai’s brother against her of cheating and forgery. After registering this case, police also got NBW (non-bailable warrant) against her and since then she was on run.
On Aug 16, she came along with her male friend set themselves on fire. Before committing suicide, they did a Facebook live naming Atul Rai, Amitabh Thakur, and a few other officers responsible for their extreme step.
DG level committee led by two IPS officers was set up by the UP government to investigate the incident of suicide. On Thursday, it submitted the report with the government following which a case of abetment of suicide and criminal conspiracy was registered at Lucknow’s Hazratganj police station, and Thakur was arrested on Friday. He was later sent to judicial custody.

He was trying to help in the woman in the case but later the accused party showed him some evidence against her. He never ran any propaganda against her. The family says why police only arrested Amitabh Thakur, however woman in the Facebook live had taken the name of the then SSP of Varanasi and other people as well.
